As the bicycle craze spread across the US in the late 19th century, bicycle maps and guide books, describing routes and road conditions, were common. This map covers most of the state of California, indicating railroads in black and bicycle roads in red. The road conditions are rated as Good, Fair, Poor, or Very Poor, and the grades are rated as Level, Rolling, Hilly, or Mountainous. Ads for bicycle shops and parts fill the border. This map was designed by George Blum in 1895.
